What's On.
Christmas Dinner
At the meeting today we discussed arrangements for a Christmas Dinner and it was agreed we would try to book the RNLI Harbour View Room for Saturday 10 December. The room was not available on that date so Ross has made a provisional book for the following Saturday 17th Dec.
The general view was that the Harbour View Room would be preferred although other rooms available.
The price per person is £27 - 3 course plus coffee/mince pies Xmas decs etc. For those not at the meeting today it was felt that although pricey looking at some other venues we would be in a public area and a change from the Thistle preferred.
We will need to confirm the booking next Monday - so more to discuss then. I will try to circulate copies of menus we have already to hand. - Ross is arranging.
The Factory
Visit this Friday 10.30 (16th Sep) - The Factory - 14 Alder Hills. (Post Code BH12 4AS)
This venue has potential for a workshop or more.
Not conveniently located but we are invited to visit and check what may be on offer.
For more directions see their website
Dorset-Do - Saturday 1 Oct
We have reserved a table for this Fair. This is indoors so we do not need the gazebo.
If available to help on the stall please let me know. -- Alan
Corfe Mullen - Woodland site.
Plans for a BBQ or picnic early October. (say 8th Oct.)
Members who want to use the site will need to join the 'Camp' club (free to MSP members) Forms will be available soon.
There are certain issues and usage we need to be aware of - nothing onerous and more when time and space willing.
Sorry for such a long episode - Regards Alan.

Visit to Bristol
12 shed members set off in 3 cars to visit the SS Great Britain in Bristol.
We had a really interesting tour of the ship, including the inside, the outside and the underneath as well!
After lunch on the quayside we visited the "Mshed" - a museum of Bristol life.
Finally we departed via Clifton and the famous Brunel suspension bridge.

On Friday 19th August, members of Poole Men's Shed together with colleagues from Gosport shed and Eastleigh shed boarded the steamship SS Shieldhall to watch the air show from Poole Bay.
The SS Shieldhall is a 1972 ton preserved steamship which spent her life as a "Clyde sludge boat." She was launched in July 1955.

July 2016 Update.
MEN'S SHEDS POOLE
1. Corfe Mullen - Woodland Campsite.
Several of us looked over the woodland site at Corfe Mullen and this is and lovely secluded area with one or two camping areas set out. Lee said we would be welcome to visit. So as our plans to christen our gazebo with a beach BBQ seem thwarted on all sides perhaps once all the ground work is finished we consider this as an alternative venue for our BBQ.
2. Poole park Fun day - Thursday 4th August 10am - 4pm.
This takes place at the Cricket Pavilion and we have been asked to put on a stall. Dave had made up a hoop-la game and if we have any other traditional games we can take please bring them along.

3. Poole Carnival. Saturday 7th August. start 11am Sea View.
Chris Holton (Chris senior) has kindly loaned his trailer to this event and Rob and team are all busy getting things together for our float. More details on the route and timing for the parade - all hands welcome.

4. Bristol Visit - Friday 9th September.
Outing to visit SS Great Britain and other venues in Bristol. (Car share as before.)
Cost - £20 to incl. Entry to SS GB travel and parking. Pick up points will be sorted out once the group is made up.
Dave is now collecting money.
5. Wood turning.
The plan is to start wood turning sessions once the Carnival is out of the way. Sessions will be held on THURSDAY mornings by arrangement with Franco and John. As numbers using the workshop will be limited please sign up at the Wednesday meeting or email/phone to book for a session.
6. A shed of our own.
With our plans to have a site in Poole Park dashed we are now exploring other possibilities.
We have made an initial approach to Limelights about use of the site behind the second garage and there is also other unutilised land in the area. Other suggested locations have been put forward and we await further developments from the Council Estate Office.
While it was rather disappointing we were not able to proceed with the Park site it does give us an opportunity to revisit plans for 'our shed'.
We may be offered another shed so, until we have somewhere to erect it, it will have to go in store.
7. Highcliffe Shed.
Two of us went over to an inaugural meeting of a group looking to start their own 'shed'. Twenty-nine people attended and there was a lot of enthusiasm to set up a group. Highcliffe shed is now officially 'In the planning stage'. Over 320 sheds are now registered in England so plenty of interest.
8. Air Show - Friday 19th August.
Party aboard the SS Shieldhall now booked, boarding at Poole Quay from 9.30am depart 10am. A party from Gosport Shed also booked. let us hope for some fine weather.

What's On Wednesday
As usual quite a few topics chewed over today at the Monday club.
1. The 'tree signs' sample I did have met with approval and on Wednesday 10 more 'slices' are being delivered to work on. Young Chris will do the graphics so the plan is to work on a production line and if enough of us to open the workshop on Thursday for this task. Ross will bring a sander and sanding belts. We are being offered a tool(s) instead of donation so need to decide what tools we need.
2. Tools - part of the Grant was set aside for tools so we need to list items we will be needing. The original idea was to buy quality battery tools with compatible batteries. We will ask local suppliers if we can get discounted prices.
3. Being a Trustee - course on Tuesday 14th June evening session at St Mary's Church Longfleet Rd Poole. £5, (Form on Wednesday)
With our ongoing investigation in converting to Charity Status it is hoped those who can will take up this offer.
4. Poole Carnival 7th August - Rob is looking a possibility of putting in a Men's Sheds float. First need a trailer of some wheels. see Rob.
5. Eagle Labs Barclays - at Westbourne. Three of us have been on the introduction course and now trying to get to grips with the laser cutter and 3D printer. Some potential for things we can make. Friday use of the equipment is free and materials are provided.
Barclays have also been offered a short course on 'Safe Internet use and On Line Banking' . Date to be arranged if enough interest - add you name the list on Wednesday. There is also possible venue for talk in Poole.
6. Beach BBQ With the weather now improving and the need for some 'fun' it was suggested we give out new gazebo a test run and have a beach BBQ. Date proposed - Fri 20th May venue Sandbanks or Branksome Dene.
7. Air Show - Friday 19th August. Our party for the Shieldhall needs to be finalised so if you have not booked a place yet and would like to join the party let Howard have a cheque for £38.
8. Newsletter - Proposed that we start a Newsletter which was put forward with the grant application. Chris will look into starting this but his work situation is now changed his future plans are uncertain. The Monday club will continue for time being.
9. Scaffold Tower - After use we reported to Limelights we considered their scaffold tower was unsafe. (although it seems it was being used by contractor). Limelights have decided to get rid of it and hire one when needed. Unless there is offer suggest we keep it for 'our shed' as parts may be of use and if we can repair then Limelights can borrow it back. Discuss with Limelights
Hope to see you Wednesday - Alan

Our New Gazebo
Thanks to our grant from the Borough of Poole Sports & Recreation fund, we have been able to purchase a gazebo for use at any events that we attend. To be on the safe side we erected it for the first time indoors at the Limelights Centre sports hall. (See below).

Visit by The Gosport Shed
Our usual Wednesday meeting was made all the more enjoyable by a visit by 30 members of The Gosport Shed.
During coffee and biscuits many interesting discussions took place between members of both sheds.
Our visitors then departed for lunch on Poole Quay prior to a conducted tour of the Poole Headquarters of the RNLI.
Friday 5th February 2016.
Skittles
A very enjoyable skittles session organised by Alan Hawkins took place at the "Coach & Horses" pub, Wimborne.
The "star" player turned out to be Bill Dore, a skittler of some past experience, who was also brave enough to demonstrate the Dorset Flop!
In addition to the skittles, a very good lunch and a moderate volume of various liquids was consumed.

A cautionary tale from the newsletter of the UK Mens Sheds Association
A Shed was set up as a project of a voluntary organisation in premises which it owns at the rear of their main building. The Shed is organised by a committee of members but it is not a separate legal entity from the parent organisation. Funding and a range of equipment was donated for the Shed and a couple of years later it has plenty of members and activity on the two days a week it opens. The parent body can now see how it can earn serious money by running a government programme to offer training/experience to unemployed people and it has asked the Shed to leave. Although the guys have done all the adaptations and fitting out etc everything donated to the Shed belongs to the parent body legally so the members are faced with not only finding new premises and but funding and further equipment. This is a bitter blow but they are a strong group with a good local reputation so it is not quite the same as starting all over again. Perhaps they could have put in place an agreement about what would happen in this circumstance? (This is an Australian Shed)
